Bug fixes have been deployed after the end of the jam.

Code is here - https://github.com/jobf/samurai-game-jam

Controls

Use a gamepad or keyboard.

Arrow keys to move, or WASD

G on keyboard to jump (gamepad button a)

H on keyboard to roll (gamepad button b)

In game you can pause with backspace or gamepad button select

Thoughts

It's a little bit incomplete but I had so much fun, it's the first time I've built something of this scale alone and I found the process very rewarding, it has been too long since I made anything that I was happy to release!

Credits

Made for Samurai game jam - https://itch.io/jam/samuraigamejam

I made most of the game code (excep the underlying libraries (see Haxe Lime and peote-view). Palette is mostly https://lospec.com/palette-list/japanese-woodblock

I did most of the pixels, special thanks to ZeggyGames for the 2D Pixel Art Character Pack which I made some very small modifications to - https://zegley.itch.io/2d-platformermetroidvania-asset-pack

Also thanks to Damien G for some tasty glyphs - https://damieng.com/typography/zx-origins/

Audio samples were recorded from a Korg X5DR audio (even the grunts).

Controls were nice and It was a nice spin among all the slashy slashy entries to force the player to “sneak” around and not be able to hurt he guards.

I wish the player had it’s own “huagh” sound, would make rolling much more fun!

Falling enemies sometiems have a weird hitbox to hurt the player, but nothing that bad. Overall, nicely done!

The controls feel really good, the jumping was really smooth and I love a large jump on a video game character. Awesome stuff!
